Use Taos County Court Records Lookup
The main online starting point for Taos County court records is New Mexico Judiciary Case Lookup. The statewide access page says Case Lookup covers appellate, district, magistrate, metropolitan, and municipal courts. For Taos County, that means many District Court and Magistrate Court case summaries can be checked online without registration. The public search is a case-summary tool. It does not provide court documents, images of pleadings, exhibits, or certified copies.
Case Lookup is useful when a person has a name, case number, filing date, court location, or attorney information. It also helps confirm whether the case belongs in District Court, Magistrate Court, or another court before making a copy request. Public access is limited by court policy. Personal identifying information is not shown, juvenile criminal cases have not appeared since July 1, 2007, and Family Violence Protection Act order-of-protection cases have not appeared since July 1, 2008.

Expungement matters affect whether some Taos County court records remain available for public release after a court order.

New Mexico's public search screen could not be fully inspected after the disclaimer during research, but the official re:SearchNM guidance and court IPRA form identify the fields people use most often. Case number searches may use court type, location, case category, year, and case-number components. Name searches work best when the spelling matches the court record. Attorney searches use first and last name, and attorney number searches use the CAID number rather than a bar number.

Request Taos County Court Records
Case Lookup does not display the document images that make up a court file. For document access, eligible registered users may use re:SearchNM, which replaced Secured Odyssey Public Access for New Mexico courts. The official access page says re:SearchNM includes Odyssey case information and documents for civil, criminal, family, and probate cases from appellate, district, magistrate, and metropolitan courts, but access depends on user type and tier.
People who do not qualify for registered document access can use the New Mexico Courts IPRA request form. For a Taos County file, select Eighth District, then choose District - Taos County or Magistrate - Taos County. The request should identify the subject of the record, case number if known, record type, and the documents sought. Court case files are kept by the court where the case was filed, so the Administrative Office of the Courts is not the custodian for local Taos files.

Types of Taos County Court Records
Taos County court records are split by court and by case type. The District Court handles the county's general-jurisdiction cases, including felony criminal matters, divorce, family cases, civil disputes, real-property claims, administrative appeals, mental-health matters, juvenile jurisdiction, and appeals from lower courts. Magistrate Court handles misdemeanors, DWI/DUI, traffic violations, felony preliminary hearings, landlord-tenant matters, and civil claims within the listed New Mexico magistrate limit.
Municipal Court records are narrower. The Town of Taos Municipal Court handles town ordinance, petty misdemeanor, traffic, and citation matters. Its official court page points citation payment users to CitePayUSA, but payment access is not the same as a full court-record search. County Clerk files are also different from court case files. Recorded land documents, marriage licenses, business licenses, tort claims, and some probate filing support belong with the County Clerk, not Case Lookup.

- Criminal District Court records may include indictments or informations, arraignments, plea paperwork, bond data, judgment and sentence, and docket entries.
- Magistrate Court records include misdemeanor, traffic, DWI/DUI, landlord-tenant, small civil, and felony preliminary hearing records.
- Family and divorce records are District Court records; the County Clerk's marriage page refers divorce questions to the District Court.
- Probate records may begin in Probate Court when informal and undisputed, while contested estate matters move to District Court.
What Taos County Court Records Show
A court record is more than a name search result. It may show the court location, case category, filing date, status, parties, attorney information, docket events, hearings, and document titles. A full court file may include pleadings and orders, while the public summary often shows only enough information to identify the case and track its progress. The Eighth Judicial District also publishes hearing schedules for the current day plus six days into the future.

Taos County Court Records Limits
New Mexico public access starts with the Inspection of Public Records Act, including NMSA 1978, Section 14-2-1, but court records also follow court access rules and statutory limits. A written request must provide the requester's name, address, phone number, and a reasonably clear description of the record under Section 14-2-8(D). The Case Lookup disclaimer also cites Section 14-3-15.1 and bars attempts to download multiple records in bulk.
Restricted Taos County court records include juvenile criminal and children's court records, protection-order cases that are not displayed online, adoption matters, mental-health proceedings, and sealed or expunged records. Case Lookup also excludes personal identifying information such as Social Security numbers and address details. The New Mexico Department of Public Safety expungement page references the Criminal Record Expungement Act for qualifying criminal and related public records.
The Department of Public Safety also publishes expungement information for law-enforcement records tied to court petitions.
This matters when a Taos County court case, arrest record, or agency record has been removed from ordinary public release.

Taos County Court Records Offices
In-person requests are still important because public search tools do not show all Taos County court records and do not provide certified copies. District Court and Magistrate Court are both in the Albright Street county complex. The County Clerk is nearby but handles a different record set, including land records, marriage licenses, business licenses, tort claims, and probate support. Recorded documents are not online according to the official county instructions, though public self-search computers are available during office hours.

For Town of Taos records, use the town's public-records route rather than the county or court form. For court documents, choose the court system IPRA form or the clerk of the court that maintains the file.
